Undergraduate Honors Papers

Disclaimer: This work does not necessarily represent the views of the University of Oregon or the Economics Department

These papers are either written as individual honors papers, or team honors projects for Economics 418-419, Community and Non-Profit Economics.

418-419 is a research course sequence where students do hands-on applied economic analysis projects either for local community groups, or on a topic of community interest. The objective is to have students complete an research paper that will provide them with some practical experience applying skills in economics and statistics, and give the local community or the State a finished research project that gives them useful answers to questions that matter for their decision-making.

The completed projects are intended to satisfy the research part of the department's requirements for graduating with honors. The class is small and involves intensive interaction with the professors, Bruce Blonigen and Bill Harbaugh. This course is designed as a capstone for students who want to graduate with honors. Enrollment is by permission.

The course begins winter quarter, when invited community speakers give talks about their potential projects, and the instructors discuss research methods and relevant aspects of benefit-cost analysis and econometrics. Students start their projects at the end of winter, and can expect to devote considerable time during spring quarter to data collection, analysis, and writing. The finished project includes delivery of a finished paper, and a presentation to interested community members.

Effects of Market Power and Strategic Manipulation Within a Simulated Kyoto Protocol Emissions Trading Program, Oliver Levine

This paper presents a model of a global CO2 emissions market as envisaged in the Kyoto Protocol. Using an agent-based simulation, countries are allowed to trade within a market defined by 1) perfect competition, 2) monopoly, 3) monopsony, and 4) unrestrained strategic battling between powerful buyers and sellers. The cost increases caused by strategic manipulation reveal that both buyers and sellers wielded significant market power, and that neither side was able to dominate. For Clark Honors College, faculty advisor Bill Harbaugh.
